When is the best time to surf in Siargao?
The most useful answer is: it depends on your surf level and what you want from the trip.
Siargao can receive surf across much of the year, but swell size, wind direction and the breaks that work change with the seasons. A month that excites an experienced surfer may not be the easiest choice for someone learning to catch their first green waves.
Instead of looking for one “perfect” month, match the season to your ability and expectations.
Surf seasons in Siargao: think conditions, not one perfect month
Siargao’s surf cannot be reduced to one universal main season. Different parts of the island respond differently to swell direction and wind, and well-known breaks such as Cloud 9 and Pacifico can have favorable windows during the southwest monsoon months. Stronger Pacific swell can also arrive outside a neat calendar window, so daily conditions matter.
The best-known surf zones can become busier when conditions are good. Beginners can still find appropriate waves with knowledgeable coaching and spot selection, but Siargao’s famous reef breaks are not automatically suitable for learners.
December to March: swell, wind and changing conditions
The northeast monsoon can bring more wind and rain to Siargao during this period. There can still be plenty of surf, but exposure and wind direction become important, so choosing the right break on the day matters.
This is a good example of why “surf season” and “best weather” should not be treated as the same thing.
April and May: a useful shoulder window
April and May can be an interesting transition period, but conditions vary from year to year. Rather than treating these months as a guaranteed shoulder season, check the forecast and choose breaks according to the swell, wind and your surf level.
Choosing dates for beginner and progressing surfers
Beginners, progressing surfers and longboarders often benefit from manageable conditions rather than simply targeting the island’s strongest swell. There is no fixed calendar guarantee: swell, wind, tide and the specific break all matter.
If your goal is learning rather than chasing powerful surf, this can be a very enjoyable time to visit.
What is the best season for beginner surfers?
Beginners generally benefit from manageable waves, appropriate tides, lighter crowds and a coach who knows which breaks suit the conditions. Lower-swell periods can offer more of those opportunities, but no calendar can guarantee a perfect beginner wave every day.
If you are completely new to surfing, the quality of your coaching and spot selection matters more than booking a famous “surf month.”

What is the best season for intermediate surfers?
Intermediate is a broad category. Someone learning to surf independently on green waves has different needs from a confident surfer looking for steeper reef waves.
Shoulder periods can be especially interesting because they may offer enough swell to progress without requiring you to chase the heaviest conditions. During stronger swell windows, local knowledge becomes even more important.
Does North Siargao have a different surf season?
The north is exposed differently from the General Luna surf zone, so the same swell and wind can affect the two areas differently. Pacifico and the wider northern coast can come alive when northern and northeast energy arrives, while other parts of the island may offer better options on a different day.
That is why our surf program is not built around promising one specific break. Coaches look at conditions and choose sessions according to level, swell, wind and tide.
What about the weather?
Siargao does not fit neatly into the simple “Philippines dry season versus rainy season” formula often repeated in general travel guides. Rainfall can be significant during the northeast monsoon months, while some mid-year months can be comparatively drier.
Weather is tropical and variable. If blue skies are more important to you than surf quality, your ideal dates may be different from those of someone travelling primarily for waves.
So when should you come?
For beginners and longboarders: consider the generally smaller-swell months, while staying flexible around daily conditions.
For progressing and intermediate surfers: shoulder periods can offer a useful balance, depending on the year.
For experienced surfers chasing stronger swell: focus less on one fixed month and more on the breaks you want to surf, swell direction, wind and the conditions developing around your dates.
The best approach is to tell us honestly how you surf now and what you want to improve. We would rather recommend an appropriate experience than promise perfect waves.
