Can beginners surf in Siargao?
Yes — with the right conditions, the right surf spot and good coaching. Siargao is famous for powerful waves such as Cloud 9, but the island’s surf is much more varied than its most photographed break.
A beginner does not need — and should not be expected — to surf the same waves as an experienced surfer. Conditions change throughout the year and even throughout the day, which is why matching the session to your level matters more than chasing a famous spot.
You do not need any surf experience
If you have never stood on a surfboard before, your first sessions should focus on foundations: ocean awareness, positioning, paddling, pop-up technique, safety and catching manageable waves.
Progress is individual. Some people stand during their first session; others need more time before everything starts to click. Neither is a problem.
Is Cloud 9 a beginner wave?
Cloud 9 is Siargao’s iconic wave, but when it is properly working it is a powerful reef break for experienced surfers. Visiting the boardwalk is part of the Siargao experience; learning to surf does not mean you need to paddle into the island’s most famous wave.
A good coach chooses a suitable break based on the swell, wind, tide, crowd and your current ability.
What is the best time for beginners to surf Siargao?
Siargao can offer surf throughout much of the year, but there is no month that guarantees perfect beginner waves every day. Broadly, the lower-swell periods can be friendlier for first-timers and longboarders, while the main swell season can bring more powerful conditions.
Weather and surf season are not the same thing, and conditions vary from year to year. If surfing is the main reason for your trip, choose your dates around your level rather than a generic “best time to visit the Philippines” article.
Why coaching matters on Siargao
Many Siargao breaks are reef breaks. That makes local knowledge particularly useful. A coach can help you understand where to enter and exit, where to position yourself, how to behave safely around other surfers and which conditions make sense for your level.
At our retreat, coaching is personal rather than one-size-fits-all. Your sessions evolve as your confidence and technique improve.

Video analysis is not only for advanced surfers
One of the fastest ways to understand what you are doing on a surfboard is to see it yourself. That is why video analysis is included in our surf program.
For beginners and improvers, video can make simple things visible: body position, where you look, timing, stance and what happens during your pop-up. Combined with feedback and surf theory, it helps turn “I don’t know what went wrong” into something you can work on in the next session.
What should you expect from a surf retreat?
A surf retreat gives you something a one-off lesson cannot: repetition. You surf across several days, receive feedback, rest, practise again and start recognising the ocean more independently.
At Surf & Yoga Siargao, the week also includes yoga and recovery around your time in the water, plus daily meals and a small group environment. We host a maximum of 10 guests.
What if your friend or partner surfs at a different level?
You do not need identical surf abilities to travel together. Coaching and spot selection can be adapted, and your goals do not have to be the same. One person may be learning to catch green waves while another works on positioning, turns or confidence in different conditions.
What should beginner surfers bring?
Bring swimwear you can move comfortably in, strong reef-safe sun protection, a reusable water bottle and an open mind. You do not need to arrive with your own surfboard; suitable equipment can be selected according to your level.
Come to learn, not to prove anything
Your first surf trip should make you want to keep surfing. The goal is not to tick off Cloud 9 or progress at somebody else’s pace. It is to build confidence, understand the ocean a little better and catch enough waves to leave excited for the next session.
