North Siargao or General Luna?
There is no single “best” place to stay in Siargao. The better question is: what kind of Siargao trip do you want?
General Luna is the island’s main tourism hub, with the biggest concentration of restaurants, cafés, bars, accommodation and surf businesses. North Siargao feels more spread out and slower, with palm-lined roads, smaller villages and a quieter rhythm.
Both can be brilliant. They simply suit different travellers.
Choose General Luna if you want energy and convenience
General Luna makes sense if you want to be close to a large choice of restaurants, nightlife, shops and the island’s most famous surf zone. It is social, convenient and easy to explore, especially if your trip is short and you want plenty happening around you.
It is also home to Cloud 9, Siargao’s iconic surf break. Cloud 9 itself is a serious reef wave when it is working, so its fame should not be confused with beginner suitability. Surf conditions and the right spot should always be matched to your level.
Choose North Siargao if you want to slow down
North Siargao is for travellers who enjoy having more space around them. Burgos, Pacifico and the surrounding northern villages offer a different experience from the busier south: quieter roads, tropical landscapes, local communities and surf sessions shaped around the day’s conditions.
You will find fewer restaurants and less nightlife than in General Luna. For some travellers that is a drawback. For others, it is exactly the point.
What about surfing?
Siargao has waves for different levels, but the best break on any particular day depends on swell, wind, tide and your ability. The north includes well-known surf zones around Pacifico and Burgos, while the General Luna area gives access to Cloud 9 and numerous southern breaks.
At Surf & Yoga Siargao, our coaches choose sessions according to the conditions and the surfer in front of them rather than promising one fixed break. Our surf program combines time in the water with surf theory, video analysis and personalised feedback.

Which area is better for solo travellers?
General Luna has an obvious advantage if your priority is nightlife and meeting lots of people independently. A small retreat in the north offers a different kind of social experience: you arrive with your own space, but surf, practise yoga and share meals with the same small group throughout the week.
Our retreat hosts a maximum of 10 guests, which is why many solo travellers find the experience social without feeling overwhelming.
Can you experience both sides of Siargao?
Absolutely. Staying in the north does not mean you can never visit General Luna, and staying in General Luna does not stop you exploring the north. If you have enough time, seeing both sides gives you a much better sense of the island.
Who is North Siargao best for?
North Siargao is particularly well suited to travellers who care more about surfing, nature, good food, recovery and genuine downtime than being within walking distance of nightlife every evening.
That is also why we chose it for our retreat. We wanted to create a place where the location is part of the experience rather than simply somewhere to sleep between activities.
